Our store, Quilters’ Fancy Limited has been a resource for Quilters in the GTA since 1979. Carol worked there from the early years and in the late 1980s we bought the store and began our adventure in the retail trade.
Carol bought an old bear made from a worn-out crazy quilt. It had the year 1904 embroidered on the sole of one foot. We named it Bill the Bear and it became our logo and mascot. Why you ask? Well, the founder of the store chose two bear’s paw patches to embellish our sign.
Sadly Bill the Bear was brazenly stolen from the store one day, lifted down from its perch high on top of a display cabinet well out of reach of children. It was a busy day with many people visiting the store and we couldn’t keep an eye on everything, so we disregarded things that we felt were safely out of reach.
About the Beast: At our store years ago, I had my office in the basement where I handled invoices, orders, shipping, accounting and the umpteen different things that crop up in a small business. One of our customers nick-named me “the beast in the basement” after seeing me lope up the stairs to give my wife a hand. We had a promotion once which offered a discount if you brought in cookies for “the beast in the basement”…
